Inhalt: The talk will report on an experiment on using a dedicated social media in teaching motivated by the following challenges of today's higher education:

Heterogenous audiences, large class sizes in introductory courses, preeminence of frontal (or lecturer-centered) instruction, passive student audiences, tight state control of teaching and examinations, and rare, incomplete, and unpublished assessments of learning and teaching performances. The talk will first introduce the social media Backstage as well as novel teaching formats.

Then it will report on an evaluation of the approach to teaching and on the evaluation's findings: Backstage can foster interactivity and awareness when used in combination with a teaching format encouraging lecture-relevant communication and the students appreciate Backstage.

Finally, the current research focus on the project will be presented.

The talk is based upon the following publication: François Bry and Alexander Pohl: "Large-Class Teaching with Backstage", to appear in a special issue on Social Media in Higher Education of the Journal of Applied Research in Higher Education, 2016
